Ujala Cygnus Partners with Karo Sambhav to Tackle Biomedical & IT Waste

Ujala Cygnus Partners with Karo Sambhav to Tackle Biomedical & IT Waste

The effort is designed to address the unique challenges of biomedical and IT-related waste, ensuring adherence to guidelines set by the Central and State Pollution Control Boards (CPCB/SPCB).

Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals has partnered with Karo Sambhav, an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) solutions provider, to manage biomedical equipment and IT waste across its entire network of hospitals.

The collaboration aims to establish a structured and technology-driven recycling ecosystem rooted in circular economy principles.

Implementing Circular Waste Management

The initiative will be rolled out across all 25 Ujala Cygnus hospitals, where Karo Sambhav will implement a compliant, traceable, and transparent waste management system.

The effort is designed to address the unique challenges of biomedical and IT-related waste, ensuring adherence to Central and State Pollution Control Board (CPCB/SPCB) guidelines.

Based on an estimated generation of 0.2 kg of e-waste per bed per day, the system is expected to process approximately 100 metric tonnes of e-waste annually.

It is projected to achieve a carbon offset of over 200 tonnes of CO₂ each year, aligning with India’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) targets and broader global climate action goals.

“With this pioneering circular economy initiative, we are demonstrating that hospitals can be catalysts of environmental change,” said Dr. Shuchin Bajaj, Founder and Director of Ujala Cygnus Healthcare Services.

Pranshu Singhal, Founder of Karo Sambhav, highlighted the collaboration’s potential impact: “The healthcare sector generates highly sensitive and complex waste streams. This partnership will showcase how circular systems can be seamlessly integrated into hospital operations.”
