Kamala Nehru Hospital & IIT Kanpur Unveil AI-Powered Lung Cancer Screening Device

By facilitating early diagnosis at the community level, the technology is expected to reduce delays in care, provide timely intervention, and enhance overall treatment outcomes.

Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital in Prayagraj has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) to develop a portable AI-enabled device for early detection of lung cancer.

The device has been developed in collaboration with Lenek Technologies, a start-up incubated at IIT Kanpur.

The initiative aims to expand access to preliminary cancer screening, particularly in areas with limited diagnostic infrastructure and specialist interpretation.

The AI system has reportedly undergone trial use by clinicians at Kamala Nehru Hospital, a member of the National Cancer Grid, where early feedback suggests the potential of the device to support frontline screening and streamline referral workflows in clinical settings.

The portable system was recently showcased at the International AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.

By facilitating early diagnosis at the community level, the technology is expected to reduce delays in care, provide timely intervention, and enhance overall treatment outcomes.

Key contributors to the project leadership include Madhu Chandra, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, and Deepu Philip, Professor-in-Charge of Innovation and Incubation at IIT Kanpur.

The Lenek Technologies team comprises Sidesh Dhakar, Himani Dhariwal, Siddharth Suhane, and Chirag Agrawal, who collectively contributed to the development and implementation of the AI-powered screening solution.

Officials emphasised that the device intends to strengthen early screening pathways and improve referral efficiency in resource-constrained settings rather than replace established diagnostic methods.
